We speak to Vanessa Kenchington, Founder of Plain Vanilla, on the enduring philosophy of the beloved bakery, and its approach to seasonal festivities.
Plain Vanilla began in 2011 with humble roots as a take-away spot nestled in the neighbourhood of Holland Village. Now, more than a decade later, it hosts 6 stores across the island, and remains dedicated to ensuring thoughtfulness behind their menu, in hopes of bringing joy to everyday moments.

For us, the holidays are all about the spirit of coming together. Plain Vanilla’’s birthday is on Dec 10th, and in this season, we’re always thinking about the village of people who have helped us get here and how grateful we are for their love and support, whether they be our work family, partners or customers!
We believe in adding value-not noise-being intentional about what we really need, and thoughtful about what has lasting impact.
We offer simple food that’s consistently done well. All our cakes and pastries are made in-house from scratch with the best ingredients we can find, then prepared using time-honoured methods that deliver flavours true to cuisine and tradition — they’re flavours that will remind you of home. At the same time, we also love to learn from and innovate with others for a fresh take on the classics, like the Neapolitan Baked Alaska created in collaboration with Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique for Christmas this year!
